Summary of the Book
The Old Man and the Sea describes the life of a fisherman called Santiago, the protagonist. He has not been able to catch a fish for 84 days. He is also considered the worst form of bad luck by people around him. A young boy called Manolin enters Santiago’s life. He is forced by his parents to sail and learn fishing from any other fisherman apart from Santiago. But the boy insists be learn fishing from Santiago. They develop a warm relationship and talk about many things every day. Manolin also takes good care of the old man and lives with him until a surprising event strikes them.
The Old Man and the Sea was honoured with the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in the year 1953. It was also mentioned by the Nobel Committee as contributing to the Nobel Prize in Literature conferred upon Hemingway in the year 1954.
